For many, Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice, 1812) and Emma Woodhouse (Emma, 1815) represent two opposing ideals of performative femininity. it used to be pretty common for there to be cats on boats. they'd take care of any rodents who would chew on ropes or wires and spread diseases. sailors were also superstitious and believed that having a cat aboard would bring good luck! this belief passed on to their wives, who kept cats - especially black ones who were believed to be extra lucky - at home in order to keep their husbands safe when at sea.
another popular superstition? that if a cat came aboard it was a sign of luck, but if it only boarded halfway and then left, it was a sign of bad luck.
most ship's cats are only found in modern times on private vessels, but they have roots going back to early history. one such example is the Vikings, who took cats with them on expeditions.

google drive is a mess sometimes with its storage things and if you're unlucky it might delete some of your files and you won't realise until it's well past the point where they won't be in 'trash' anymore and you're fucked
all is not lost however!
if you're on drive via browser, hit the little ? in a circle next to the settings cog and select "help"
search for "file recovery"
it'll show you the ways to try and recover your files on pc, android, and mac etc
these don't matter
you need to scroll down to the bottom and just hit the "contact us"
you'll be logged out automatically
log back in
click the little box to give google permission to attempt to restore your files for that account
click "submit"
give them some time to work but it's an automatic process
i've got most of my files back in less than 10 minutes
all is not lost! rejoice!

Basically all of the plants we call “vegetables” are actually… not that? The word vegetable basically lumps non-sweet (for the most part) plants together. A cucumber is actually a fruit, so is a tomato and eggplant. Squash and similar “vegetables” are also fruits. Broccoli is a very specialized leaf, and is the exact same species as kale, brussel sprouts, and cabbage to name a few.
Potatoes, carrots, and other thick roots that store carbs are tubers.
Basically vegetables don’t exist, they’re just a way to lump a large amount of plants with similar tastes together.

in a completely botanical context, “vegetable” is largely (but technically not entirely) meaningless.
in a culinary context, it can vary! sometimes it gets used to mean “any edible plant”, which can include fruits and nuts, among other things. other times (more commonly in my experience but I’m just one gal) its definition is more narrow, specifically to mean “non-fruit, non-nut, non-grain, generally more savoury in taste & substantial in mass”.
the classification’s a bit arbitrary, can vary depending on region (i.e. some people & places do not consider seaweed a vegetable), and is largely used for the sake of discussing how an edible plant should be prepared. another context in which this matters: finances!! vegetables are taxed and tariffed differently, as all other food products are, as everything is, for a multitude of reasons ranging from “different costs for different labour” to “money is arbitrary and it scares me a lot”!
in a historical context, it can also mean different things! around the 16th or 17th century is when the word at large is accepted as “any plant cultivated, in part or in whole, for the purpose of food”. prior to this, in he 15th century, the word sees use to describe “any non-animal life” or specifically “any plant life”. (of note, “vegetable” in this sense still sees some use as a botanical term, apparently! though its scope is so broad that it isn’t really as useful as things like “leaf” or “fruit” or “root”, which are specific functional parts of a plant.) even earlier before this, the roots of the word largely just mean “growing” or “flourishing” or “being strong and lively”. which is a bit funny, considering how in the mid 1800′s the word started being used to convey “monotonous and uneventful”. language changes, like people do & culture does, which is kind of beside the point, but it’s still a fun anecdote IMO.

I want to boost everything this person has said and add on.
The reason I call myself a tomboy now, despite it being seen as a childish word and having had someone swear at me over it because ‘tHeRe’S nO suCh thInG as BoY thInGs anD giRL thIngS sHut uP’ is because I couldn’t call myself that or be like that when I was a kid. It was seen as a negative thing and I was already bullied enough. “Looking like a boy” was the worst thing that could happen to a girl.
And I’m not even 26 yet. We aren’t talking 30+ years ago, we are talking 2000s and even 2010s. It’s only since trans people have become more accepted in the past few years that gender nonconformity has too.
And the people who helped me accept my gender nonconformity more than anyone else? Were trans people. They taught me, “there’s nothing wrong with how you feel. You’re still a valid woman no matter what you wear, how you have your hair or what you’re into ❤️”
And don’t even get me started on how people treat gender nonconforming men. JK Rowling has a lot of nerve to be like “uwu boys can wear dresses and only us gendercrits accept that!” when she has, even in recent works, made femininity in men a negative trait, as well as making masculinity in women a negative trait also.
A lot of people still don’t accept gnc people even now. Just last year I had someone tell me they’d never let their daughter “dress like a boy”, and I’m always terrified to walk into a bathroom in case the next JK Rowling is in there, sees my gender expression and pepper sprays me or worse.
“There’s no such thing as boy things and girl things.” I don’t need to be told that and I’m sure 99% of trans people also don’t need to be told that. Tell that to the society that hates us both instead of actively encouraging that hate.
Gonna point out the og tweet thread is now full of terfs saying that life was better for gay people in the fucking 80s, that it was super easy for them to be a tomboy in the 70s and 80s and therefore it must have been that way for everyone, and that it was totally acceptable to be a gnc gay person in the 80s! 🤪
They’re rewriting history as we speak to try to argue trans acceptance is making it harder to be gay and gnc for youth than it was to be gay in the 80s. This is a blatant lie.

I've seen a lot of people talk about abolishing prison, because it's the cool, new hip thing that everyone is talking about. And instead of understand what it means, they think it's the liberation of wrongfully imprisoned minorities - which it is. But also:
Prison abolition means setting up a system of psychological and physical help for the people whom are deemed dangerous to society. Yes, that includes Evil Fucking People. Recovery and rehabilitation should be the goal, not incarceration. THAT is abolishing prison.
Of course I want that abusive piece of shit father who abused his children to die. I want him dead! DEAD. But it does not mean that that's what I want as an official law, because as much as I'd love to see him dead, the betterment of society and the rehabilitation and development of a human fucking being is important.
The benefits to prison abolition are ENDLESS. But it is also a struggle, and y'all can't keep going through life with a 5 year old's justice mentality. I swear, fandom has rotted your fucking brains off, because we NEED ACTIVISTS. We NEED TO KNOW WHY WE WANT WHAT WE WANT, AND WHAT IT ENTAILS.
You believe in something? Look up the activists who are doing work there. Read up on it. Look up videos. Follow them on their social media. Work in your communities, if you've the opportunity.
